500,000 .INFO Registrations in Less Than 90 Days U.S., Germany Lead .INFO Registrations NEWTOWN, PA - 23 October, 2001 - Afilias, the .INFO registry, today announced that more than 500,000 .INFO domain names were registered during the domain’s first 90 days of operation. In comparison, the .COM domain took more than five years to reach the same milestone, according to a U.C. Berkeley study of domain acceptance.1 INFO's registration results to date are proving that it is poised for tremendous growth and could be a boon for the domain space. According to SnapNames data to be published later this week in its September 2001 State of the Domain report, a total of 196,833 net registrations (new registrations less deletions of expired names) were made in the .COM, .NET, and .ORG domains during the period of September, 2001.2 .INFO is the first truly global, unrestricted domain name since .COM, and opened for registration on July 25, 2001. .INFO obtained more than 52,000 registrations during its Sunrise Period for trademark holders, and more than 300,000 registrations as part of its “start-up” or open registration which began on September 12, 2001. The balance have been registered since Afilias opened .INFO for live, real-time registration on October 1, 2001. “Everyone from mom-and-pop stores to Fortune 500 companies are registering their .INFO Web addresses," said Roland LaPlante, Chief Marketing Officer of Afilias, which runs the .INFO registry. “The response has been absolutely global, as we had expected with this new unrestricted and intuitive domain. .INFO registrations have come from more than 70 countries, with slightly more than half coming from Europe. (Germany alone accounts for nearly 30 percent of registrations.) Forty percent come from North America and five percent come from the Asia-Pacific region. Latin American registrations account for the balance of 1.2 percent. According to Domain Stats, the NetNames global domain database, .INFO now has more registrations than most European country domains. Many companies have already adopted .INFO as part of their Web strategies. The Manhattan Transit Authority, which aggressively markets its WebTicket program, is already using its aptly named www.MTA.info site, after being shut out of the .COM and .ORG space. Similarly, Subaru was unable to register one of their newest models – WRX – and is now using www.wrx.info to help their customers access information more quickly and easily. RedSheriff, an interactive global measurement and research specialist, has also restructured their Web presence to include a .INFO customer service portal (www.redsheriff.info) as part of their $1.3 million global infrastructure expansion. Businesses and individuals interested in registering a .INFO name can check availability by viewing the WHOIS database on Afilias’ site. A list of authorized registrars is also available.
