On January 12, 2012, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will open a process that could trigger a dramatic expansion of the Internet and launch a new era of online innovation. We are familiar with .com, .org, .net, among the roughly two dozen generic top-level domains currently occupying the Internet's addressing system. Hundreds, possibly thousands of new gTLDs, could be moving in within a year.

The program is not without risks and not for everyone. Understanding the marketing opportunities, the application process, and the program's built-in trademark protections is important even if a new gTLD is not for you.

Moderator: Naseem Javed, ABC Namebank

Panelists: Rod Beckstrom, President and CEO, ICANN; Roland LaPlante, Senior VP and CMO, Afilias; and Kristina Rosette, Special Counsel, Covington & Burling.

PostgreSQL Conference Europe 2011 offers three days packed with presentations about PostgreSQL and related technologies. Ram Mohan, CTO of Afilias, will offer a keynote address, Afilias' Winning Bet on Open Source, which will cover the following:

In 2001, Afilias launched .INFO, the first new gTLD ever approved by ICANN. To support its new registry platform, Afilias committed to using open source technology with PostgreSQL. A great deal of consideration was taken to make this strategic choice, on costs, risks, quality and ongoing support for the technology. Over the past 10 years, Afilias has realized numerous benefits and key learnings from its winning strategy and from its involvement in the open source communities. Over the next five years, as the domain industry shifts considerably, so will its technologies, applications and business models. What role will open source play in these future trends?
